REU Proposal 2019

SURREAL (Site for UndeRgraduate REsearch in mAchine Learning)

Undergraduate research

Students presenting at the SSU Science Symposium of Research and Creativity, April 2019

Program highlights

  • Varied applications of machine learning across several imaging domains (CT, EEG, photomicrographs, spectrograms)
  • Multi-disciplinary research in building earth sciences based cyber-infrastructure, identification of diseases and monitoring animal biodiversity.
  • Mentoring from faculty in Computer Science, Geology, Biology and Geography
  • 10 week program; three-week lab/lecture course and seven-weeks independent research
  • $4250 stipend
  • Provided in-campus housing accommodation with an all-inclusive (meals, parking, etc.) package
  • Assistance with travel costs
  • Concerts and movies at the Green Music Center (GMC)
  • Weekly professional development workshops
  • Field trips to Silicon Valley, and local technology companies

Students in our REU program will have the opportunity to work with researchers from different disciplines. To learn about their research and about specific REU projects please click here.

Who should apply?

  • Rising sophomores or juniors (must be a returning student in Fall 2020)
  • Highly motivated students interested in machine learning
  • Students interested in the possibility of graduate school (M.S./Ph.D.)
  • Have computer science or electrical engineering as a major or minor
  • United States citizens or permanent residents (required by NSF guidelines)
  • Able to show proof of health insurance for duration of the program
  • Applicants are not required to have previous research experience.

The goal of the proposed REU site is to (i) provide undergraduate students with research experience and training in machine learning techniques for several different applications ( across a variety of imaging domains and disciplines), (ii) engage under-represented students and minority population, and (iii) motivate them to pursue graduate studies and seek research oriented careers.

REU students will identify cross-connection between different domains and explore potential new problem solving and critical thinking skills needed for working in interdisciplinary teams. They will gain experience using state-of-the-art machine learning tools for automatically learning from data. In addition to research work, students will enrich their all round development through social activities (visits to Green Music Center, SSU Preserves and Makerpace). They will also will participate in weekly professional development workshops to learn about career pathways and to hone their skills in professional writing, public presentations and speaking. At the end of the program, a campus-wide research symposium will be held at which our REU students will have the opportunity to showcase their work through a combination of oral and poster presentations. Best talk and poster will be recognized. The program incorporates social interactions and networking designed to foster the development of an ongoing community of learners, giving students opportunities to make connections that will endure beyond the end of the summer and that will support them in their academic paths.

We expect that the students selected to participate in this program will be present for the full ten weeks of its duration and will participate in all the scheduled activities associated with the program. The majority of time will be spent in the lab, but equally important are the social activities and professional development aspects of the program.
